The Union of European Football Associations has announced that a total of 1,000,000 tickets for EURO 2020 will be distributed via “new blockchain-based mobile ticketing system”, reads UEFA press release from February 17.
Blockchain system will guarantee secure ticket distribution, making replications, or fake tickets, impossible. It will also reduce the number of printed tickets.
On the other hand, new system is expected to make the entry to the match “smooth, safe, and secure”. Fans will not need to visit ticket collection points prior to the match. The QR-codes tickets will be activated via Bluetooth upon the arrival to the stadium.
Moreover, mobile application will allow fans to easily transfer tickets to their guests, while “follow my team” ticket holders will receive tickets, only if their team is qualified, explained UEFA press release.
Fans will be able to purchase tickers via UEFA EURO 2020 mobile tickets app that is expected to be available at the end of May.
Earlier in June 2019, UEFA has distributed over 80% of the tickers via blockchain system for the UEFA Nations League finals.
Football club and unions have long been adapting new blockchain technology in various use cases. For example, as Future Time previously reported, Italian Serie A football club ACF Fiorentina has implemented a blockchain system as the anti-counterfeiting solution.
